Keep Your Blinders On

To be successful, keep your blinders on and focus on yourself. It is proven that deep focus helps narrow down your thoughts. You start to take more control over your own mind. The more you focus on you and your path, the happier you will be. This ties directly into not comparing yourself to others. That theme of comparison has unfortunately become easier due to social media being at the direct reach of our fingertips.

The ole saying goes, “You are your own thoughts”. What you focus on expands into your actual reality. No point in giving others attention if you aren’t paying attention to your own growth. Without a focus on you, there will be no process.

Challenge – Focus on yourself for the next 24 hours and see if you can spot a difference in your own personal grounding. Prioritize yourself with intention. Be obnoxious about it if you have to. See if you notice a difference.

Reignite

Sometimes life throws you curveballs that are completely out of your control. Yesterday I was broken the news that my grandfather had passed away unexpectedly in a car crash. I was absolutely devastated and broken given I have now lost both of my grandfathers in the last two months. It felt like I had the wind knocked out of my sails from a emotional perspective. I took the rest of the work day off and was able to take a nice walk along the beach. No music, no podcasts, just myself and the roommate upstairs. I was isolated with my own thoughts.

We have a set plan to go alongside our internal intentions. Sometimes you find yourself drifting away from some of your principles and beliefs that you hold yourself accountable on (especially 2021 self goals). It is perfectly fine and there is no room to beat yourself over it. It happens to all of us.

This is just a reminder to reignite your thoughts, reignite your principles, and most importantly… reignite your personal growth. The beauty of these principles is that you can return and embrace these things at any moment in time. What happened yesterday is the past. We can reignite our body and mind whenever we like. Why not take time to check in with yourself and do it right now?

I love you, Pat. Rest in peace.

Become Your Number One Fan

Our identity is wrapped up in what others think of us—or, more accurately, what we think others think of us.

Jay Shetty

Often times when we wake up and go throughout our day, we try to live up to what we think others think of us. We do this even at the expense of our own values. I want to say it is human nature to do so, but I don’t think it is. We have been programmed through social media to constantly be comparing ourselves to others. Applications like Facebook and Instagram are right at our finger tips at all times. Through these apps, you see Joe and Sally post 15 second highlights of their best lives. These people may or may not have consummate happiness, but for that brief amount of time when you click, we think so. Comparison is the thief of joy.

Sometimes you have to put your blinders on and filter out all the excess noise. The true way to building a meaningful life is to filter out all that outside chatter and look within. There is a lot going on in our country right now and I am not saying completely ignore the outside world / politics but you can’t let it dictate your life.

Become your own number one fan. Nobody believes in you as much as yourself. Be gentle and talk to yourself a bit more (it’s not that looney, I promise). While some thick skulled people will hate you for this, most people will love to make you part of their life to have a taste of that energy you have. Self belief is always the first step towards success. Waking up and attacking the day with this mindset will help separate you from the average person. Loving yourself = competitive life advantage? I’ll take that.

Happy Friday! Through the line, not to the line. Finish strong.

Brick By Brick

First work week of the new year. New year, new week, new goals, new energy, new failures, new results. Feet hit the floor today and I felt absolutely grateful. Woke up at 5am this morning and crushed a Peloton ride to start the work day (shoutout the homie Alex Toussaint). I am constantly trying to pitch the concept of making Mondays great again #MMGA. You can’t hate Mondays, they are 1/7 of your life. Pretty crazy when you think about it.

The ole saying goes, “Rome wasn’t built in a day”. This may be true BUT they were laying bricks every hour. That’s how I plan on building my 2021. Brick by brick. Get up and lay your bricks down today. Lay your foundation today so you can establish your floor plan for the week. Everyone likes the idea of building Rome, but how many are willing to lay the bricks every single day? If it was easy everyone would do it. Be fucking great and have an awesome week.

2020: A Year of Lessons Learned

This is going to sound a bit silly, but when I used to read through those old text books in middle school history class, I would have never thought I’d see myself as one of those pictures. This is silly because everything that isn’t the “now”, is history. It is the past. We are legitimately living in history. Every single day we wake up and our head hits the bed, we are part of history. This is truly an unprecedented time and one that will be talked about and illustrated through educational textbooks for generations to come. Netflix is most certainty already in the works for a documentary. So as December is quickly finishing up and our monumental year is coming to an end, I ask you…

What did you learn in 2020?

You are on your own. Self sufficiency is truly indispensable. With being self-sufficient comes taking certain matters into your own hand. Health is a big factor in that (as we are living in a virus pandemic). I invested in a WHOOP strap which has helped tremendously for providing 24/7 physiological data and getting to know my internal body better. No free ads, but I highly recommend it.

I have learned how important mental health is. This ties right along with choosing your habits wisely. These reflect strongly on your physical and mental fitness. Self-care is a priority, not a privilege.

I have also learned that people are very scared and that’s why we as a country have been easily forced to stay under control with no questions or push back. We are willingly and ready to go along with group/government pressure even if it means giving up some of your human rights in the midst of it. Freedom is not free and it should never be taken for granted.

I am thankful for starting my “Flexibull” brand. I have health, family, and good friends. I have learned that gratitude is a form of super power like the Hulk’s super strength. A little goes a long way. The world sucks right now and I would never sugar coat that. We are in a very devastating place as a country/world and unfortunately we are heading into a “dark winter” according to the top politicians and CDC officials. Remember that happiness is self-created. “Do not look for happiness outside yourself. The awakened seek happiness inside.”

Have an awesome end of the month and take time to reflect on the lessons you have learned this year!

Thursday Mood: RIDE THE WAVE

Poseidon – God of the sea, earthquakes and storms . Own the storms of your life. Show up and deal with the emotional day to day waves. DANCE IN THE MOTHA FUCKIN RAIN!

2020 is a lesson in not forcing things to happen. Work with the flow of energy rather than against it.

It really is unpredictable what life is going to throw at you. You wake up and wish for a great day, but can’t always control the uncontrollable (external events). Being able to deal with the highs and lows of the emotional coaster that comes with life is one of the biggest skills you can teach your mind to do. It is by no way easy. It is human nature to automatically act on emotion. Whether that be a good or a bad one

So I challenge you today to “RIDE THE WAVE”. If you are having a bad moment in time, remember… This will pass. For it is exactly that, just a moment in time. Sit with the feeling and remember that.

FLEXIBULL PODCAST #1 – BLOG OF JAKE

I am beyond excited to officially launch the FLEXIBULL PODCAST. The first episode was a casual, yet intensive discussion on the ins and outs of Bitcoin with my very good friend Blog of Jake. He not only has an incredible blog which I have linked, but a podcast with some really remarkable guests as well. Sensing big things from him in 2021. Our conversation was driven off each other’s positive energy and he truly ran with my curiosity for Bitcoin and enlightened me on a ton. This is worth the listen if you have no idea what Bitcoin is. Think of it has Bitcoin 101 or Bitcoin for Dummies. I am grateful to have had him on and I feel as if he will definitely be a friend of the show and a reoccurring guest.

It felt a bit weird at first to be back on the mic, but 10 minutes in I could feel my flow back. I had a top rated podcast on iTunes two years ago through Barstool Sports called “The Crease Dive”. It was the number one college lacrosse podcast in the country and I was the co-host with my friend Jordie. I am very excited to be back behind the mic and have some big episodes on the way. Thank you guys for supporting and following along the way.

Check out the first episode of the FLEIXBULL PODCAST here!

Cold Shower Gang #CSG

This simple life hack is a no brainer. If you are reading this, you own a shower. It will cost you absolutely nothing in US dollars and the only extra step you have to take is just don’t turn the temperature handle all the way left. The cold shower gang is an elite group of individuals. I joined the #CSG in May and have not looked back. A close friend of mine (shoutout NB) and the legendary, Wim “Ice Man” Hoff recruited me to take on this new habit. I have seen a ton of good benefits from this simple daily adjustment. Here are the top 4 benefits from cold showers I have seen:

Increase in willpower – When you wake up in the morning, your body is craving a hot shower and you automatically want to turn the handle all the way. This is beyond normal. Take this mindset away and replace it with something you don’t necessarily want to do ( a 50 degree shower at 6am) to increase your willpower. This then translates to other things in life you may not have control over. Drinking, drugs, gambling, food moderation (snack city) , attention craving and even sex. When that first cold blast of liquid hits your skin, your body and mind get a bit of a shock. When I hear the word, “shock” I automatically think bad. But this is a good kind! This shock increases your oxygen intake and increases your heart rate (speeds up metabolism). The exposure to these cold temperatures causes stem cells to form brown fat instead of white fat… FUN FACT! Brown fat causes our bodies to burn extra calories to keep warm.. So if we can produce brown instead of white fat, that could help burn off excess body fat you may or may not have put on during quarantine. Not all fats are bad… Covid- 15 > The Freshman 15.

Increase Blood Circulation – An increase in your circulation is one of the top reasons why experts recommend cold showers. Poor cardiovascular circulation compromises blood flow, thus stressing out the heart. This then leads to a number of health problems.. fatigue, headaches, high blood pressure, muscle cramps etc.. When you improve your circulation, you are improving your heart health. The fresh increase in blood flow is enhancing your mental health performance, boosting your immune system (which is HUGE right now for a global pandemic) and helps develop more strength and energy to live the best way you want. We talk about being able to control what YOU can control. Taking care of your body and your health through daily habits is one thing you can do during this global health pandemic.

Reduces Muscle Inflammation – This has been my personal favorite benefit and something that I have really been noticing. After my running workouts, I ALWAYS take a cold shower and this helps reduce muscle soreness in the present and the following day to come. Cold water immersion has been scientifically proven to fight against the infamous DOM ( delayed muscle soreness). The cold showers lower the damaged tissue’s temperatures and constrict the blood vessels in these sore/sensitive areas. This is proven to help reduce any swelling and inflammation. Don’t just take this from a new blogger, but take it from the hundreds of professional athletes you see soaking in an ice bath after a strenuous workout. This is a simple, free, easy and natural way of speeding up the recovery process. This. Shit. Works.

Level Up in Happiness – Feeling down or stressed out? TAKE A COLD SHOWER. It is very difficult to be worried about something while you are taking on extreme temperatures on either side of the spectrum. Going from one extreme temperature to another is the best way to stay present.

A 2007 research study found that cold showers can help treat depression symptoms, and if used on a routine basis alongside lifestyle adjustments (cut beer out and boost your T levels), can complement the effects of prescription medications in lifting moods.

Pretty cool, right? The cold water triggers a flood of mood-boosting neurotransmitters which make you feel happy. It is a pure and natural rush of dopamine! Next time you feel yourself down and a bit of a depressed mental funk, get naked and take a cold shower. Report back.

Bottom line is this stuff works. Science has proven it and I also have tested it first hand. Give it a shot. Start with even just 45 seconds cold if you want to dabble with this concept. Cold showers will activate your natural healing powers to put you in a better psychological and mental state. You will start to feel yourself get healthier and happier. Definitely worth the building this into your lifestyle. Enjoy and GET COLD!

Addiction (Guest Blog)

Addiction – Let’s talk about it. Booze, Cocaine, Strippers (the cocktail of trouble), gambling, winning, stealing, cheating, success, masturbation, puppies. Although most of these have had a net positive effect on society and continue to run almost all of my thought. These are some of the biggest vices that I have and will have for the rest of my life.

But today I found a new vice. Something that I have never experienced before. Coffee. Did you know that coffee actually comes from coconut trees? Well it doesn’t. It comes from the seeds of berries. MMM! The first time that beatiful taste of chocolate and caramel touched my lips, I instantly knew my life would never be the same.

Now, you’re probably thinking this is going to turn into me bragging about how much more I could accomplish, much like one of those crossfit freaks who puts “coffee addict” and posts videos of himself power snatching 250 pounds every day at 4AM. No. My newest vice, coffee, instantly sent a shock of exhiliration down my spine that I haven’t felt since I sucked on my mom’s titty for the first time. I immediately had the urge to spit some of the best game I ever have seen (by myself or others).

I immediately walked up to the counter, hoping to spur a little of giggling from the overweight, mulatto barista. Knowing that I had to hydrate due to the diaretics I have often heard about in coffe, I ordered a “bottle of water.” She immediately handed some bullshit cardboard milk carton full of water, smiled, at me and said “here you go.”

Knowing I had to spit game and win her over due to my recently acquired superpower, I quipped, “this is good for the environment, right?” she confirmed, then I retorted: “good, then I’m going to throw it on the ground as soon as I get outside.”

“You like littering?” she said. “Yes, it makes me feel very naughty.” I winked and walked away. As I sat down at my table to finish my final paper for the semester, she approached me with her newly minted business card on bone colored paper with Silian Rail typeface, handed it to me, and requested that I call her within the next 72 hours.

Today was the day I added one more vice to my collection of addictions. Today is the day I will never look back. If only I could go out and test it out at the BARS tonight – but I have to be up at 3AM for Crossfit.

Until next time, cheers.

A Wet Apple

It looks like my much anticipated podcast debut is going to have to be put on hold for now.

This past weekend I went into NYC for the first time since officially moving out of there in the Spring. I will admit, it was a bit of an eerie feeling. Part of me didn’t miss the concrete jungle one bit, the other part of me realized that’s where all my friends are. Super mixed emotions for sure… Anyway, I went to an engagement party and I was asked to bring my “DJ equipment” . I am known to have many alter egos and one of mine is my DJ alias. My trident is yoga/wall street/DJing. The three headed dragon! Music has always been a passion of mine and I like to make people dance and add to a fun experience. Since we took a car into the city, bringing all the gear wasn’t really a problem for me, so I happily obliged.

The classic drunk mom… one hour into me absolutely crushing the ones and twos, I get a niceeee cannonball of champagne on my laptop from an elderly woman. The classic ” My only daughter is getting married so let me get hammered and soak this poor boys laptop in alcohol.”.. It’s a classic mistake. Happens all the time… I couldn’t get mad on such a special night for them. So me being a good sport, I see my laptop go pitch black and I decided to go full Charlie Chaplin. No screaming.. no overreacting, just pure internal pain that my laptop has gone full zero dark thirty. A bit impressed with my emotional control if I do say so myself.

Could this be a blessing in disguise? To be totally honest, I kind of hated my laptop. It was a MacBook Air from 5 years ago, with a two-bit dinky Amazon cover on it. The thing was garbage. Hand up on my end for picking the Air over the MacBook Pro in the first place. Barley used my laptop unless I was DJing or using it to Twitch Stream Madden.

In a turn of events of me being a “blogger” now, I needed this thing more than ever.. I can’t start my podcast up now or able to blog from the comfort of my home. I plan on going to the apple store Sunday and buying a brand new MacBook Pro. Why? Because I can. Why? Because I want to go back to being a laptop guy and using my phone less for things. Why? So I can set up my in-home podcast studio and have super cool guests on and churn some content out. I needed a new laptop anyway and this drunk soon to be mother-in-law was my savior. Thank you, lady.
